Cenotes Diving

ONE of the reasons we decided to make Playa del Carmen our new home is because of the mystical attraction found in the Mayan culture, which is rich and full of mysteries. As scuba divers, wherever we find water, we think: I can dive here!

Imagine your next dive in the freshwater, underground rivers that make up the world famous cenotes or 'dzonots' in Mayan. Crystal clear and cool water, where scuba diving takes on another meaning. And remember to smile at the camera, your friends and familly won't believe you otherwise!

Scuba Video Services can be your cavern or cave private videographer and photographer. Check out the video and thumbnails bellow.

Scuba diving in the Cenotes or sinkholes will take your trip worth any penny. Imagine putting on your wetsuit in the middle of the jungle, surrounded by land, threes, huge rocks and a small pool of water!?! Any diver that comes to the Mayan Riviera to dive into the cenotes will tell you how clear the water is (and colder than the sea!) and also that they don't really have words to express what they felt while floating between stalagtites and stalagmites.

It is a unique experience that will make your scuba diving trip memorable.

What will be my cenote scuba diving experience?

As soon as you arrive on site, your certified guide will brief you about the geology and also archeology aspects of each cenotes. The terminology such as, speleotherms, stalagtites, fosils will be then part of your vocabulary as a "cavern diver".

Then, he will present you the facilities of the site that you are going to do your dive at. It is important to respect the landowner's rules that has been established in agreement of the access to their treasures: the cenotes!

Will I learn some new signs during my dive in the cenote?

Yes, you will have a "new" set of guidelines to follow during your dive in the cenotes. Cavern diving and cave diving are ruled by a set of rules, simple to implement but very important to follow.

For example, you will have to follow a nylon line that is showing you the way in and out of the cavern zone, it is also important to know what to do with the line if your light would come to fail!

Communication in the overhead invironement is as important as it is simple to understand! As you cannot see your dive buddy (dark and following behind or ahead of you) you will have use your dive light to signal him/her any information.

Cave Exploration and Cavern Diving

SINCE the 1980s the region of the Yucatan Peninsula has been a playground for numerous speleological experts, explorers and archeologists.

Because it is well-known that ancient Mayans were using the sinkholes, called cenotes, for their freshwater supply and possibly as burial or sacrifial sites, it is of major interest for us to learn and understand how one of the most advanced civilizations in the history of mankind was living.

Today, research and survey projects are still being run under direct supervision by the SEDUMA (Secretaria de Desarollo Urbano y Medio Ambiente) from the Mexican government and the INAH (Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia) with the support of the National Geographic Society.

It is in our interest to know more about the fragile environment and ecosystem of the Yucatan's sinkholes. Dos Ojos, Chac-Mool, Ponderosa, Tajma Ha, Gran Cenote and Calavera are just a few cenotes that are regularly dived and explored by experienced cave divers.
